Hi Wanderlust,
How's it goin'?? Just came across your Vietnam plans browsing net and being a VTP (Vietnam Travel Professional) myself would have a couple of suggestions and amend your itinerary a bit by spending few days more in South with a trip down to Mekong Delta:
For Example:
After your arrival in HCMC first of all discover city. Visit Reunification Palace, History Museum, Notre Dame and old colonial Post Office.
Check out China town with Tien Hau Pagoda and go shopping in Vietnams biggest market, Ben Thanh market.
All of this can be done within one day. In evening check out bars and restaurants around Pham Ngu Lao and near Opera House.
Next day book a day trip to Cu Chi, visit underground tunnels and include ancient center of Cao Daism in Tay Ninh.
After that travel down to Cai Be. Visit floating market and take a wooden sampan boat down endless canals and observe daily life and Vietnamese people living in this most fruitful part of country.
Homestay there are is also a possibility. Then continue down Bassac River to Can Tho and Chau Doc, which is exit to Cambodia.
From there take a Blue cruiser speed boat all way to Phnom Phen. This is a great 4 hours trip and will leave u speechless. Upon arrival discover PP.
From this point on you can still book a cheap ticket with Air Asia to Bangkok or Singapore and then back to your final destination!!
Good luck!

B.J: Really appreciate the tips! Plans have firmed up a little more and it looks like I wouldn't be able to make the Mekong Delta trip after all. But will keep HCMC and Cai Be in mind. Thanks again!
BTW, B.J. You wouldn't happen to be LIVING in Hanoi would you??
Hello again, no not Hanoi.
I'm here in HCMC. Pity you're missing Mekong Delta it's an amazing place.
I just started to read some of your posts and notice that you're from Singapore. That's funny, because i've got my big brother living there. They are in Siglap with family renting a nice home.
Anyway, let me know if you would need any further tips and I'll be glad to assist.
Cheers,
B.J.
